  • fertile

    when a non-fissile nucleus (for example uranium 238) is struck by a neutron, it is transformed into a fissile nucleus (plutonium 239). This option is used in breeders.

  • fissile

    a "fissile" nucleus disintegrates into two lighter weight elements when it is struck by a neutron. This disintegration emits neutrons that will continue the chain reaction, releasing a large quantity of energy in th form of heat.

  • flammable range

    the difference between the minimum and maximum volume percentages of a product, material or mixture which, when mixed with air, forms a compressed flammable gas.

  • Florence forum

    electricity consultation and regulation process initiated by the European Commission in 1998; the forum presided over the organization of the common electricity market.

  • from well to wheel

    "well to wheel" analysis compares the energy efficiency and CO2 emissions of different fuels and engine systems, from production (well) to exhaust gas (wheel).
