Question:
I would like to install a solar water heater for my detached home. Are there any government discounts?
Answer:
The water heater is the simple stand the most wide spread application of solar heating. A typical one can supply about 60% of the hot water necessary for domestic applications, throughout the year. In 2002, the price of a standard individual solar water heater fitted with 4 m2 of sensors and a 250l tank (sufficient for 3 to 4 persons depending on the region) is between 3,800 and 5,300 euros, including installation and tax. This price does not include the refund paid to purchasers by ADEME*. The amount of this grant varies depending on the surface area of the sensors, and is only paid if the purchaser uses approved manufacturers and professional installers who have signed the Qualisol charter. The maximum amount of the grant for a solar water heater with 4 m2 of sensors is 700 or 920 euros, depending on the region in which it is installed. This amount may be increased by additional discounts of an equivalent amount awarded by the Regional Council, some General Councils and occasionally the municipality. Thus, the amount of public reimbursements can be as high as 1,400 euros per heater, or about one third of the total cost. The grant applies to systems installed in a private individual’s home (main residence, secondary or rural residences or cottages). A single grant is paid per dwelling unit.
