At dawn on September 28, 2003, an electric arc formed between a power cable and a tree in Switzerland. Poor communications between Swiss and Italian operators plunged Italy into darkness for several hours. The cost of this outage: almost 13,000 megawatts, or the power output of 10 nuclear reactors!
